Police suspect a roughly 30-year-old Finnish man of domestic terrorist offences related to extreme right-wing ideology and activities.
On Wednesday, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said it is investigating a case of suspected training to commit a terrorist offence and an aggravated firearms offence committed with terrorist intent.
The suspect was detained last weekend. The Päijät-Häme District Court ordered the man be held in remand on Wednesday on suspicion of criminal offences.
The investigation is being carried out in cooperation with the Häme Police Department in south-central Finland and the Finnish Security Intelligence Service (Supo).
Threat averted
In a press release, the NBI said the ongoing investigation has deterred potential threats to life or safety.
"There was some sort of threat, but with [the suspect's] detention we have been able to ensure that, at least for the moment, the direct threats have been resolved," Detective Chief Inspector Sanna Springare told Yle.
She said the potential threat would have been domestic.
"At least at this stage, it does not appear that the situation would have spread abroad," she said.
Springare said the police are currently investigating whether other people may be involved.
According to authorities, the crime suspicions arose from their own intelligence gathering. The suspect's home was searched this month in connection with a suspected aggravated firearms offence. Springare says the search led police to suspect terrorist offences.
The preliminary investigation is still at an early stage and the police will therefore not comment on the details of the case.
