HAAGA AND HELIA, TO MERGE 1 JANUARY 2007
TWO BIG PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES, HAAGA AND HELIA, TO MERGE 1 JANUARY 2007
HAAGA University of Applied Sciences and Helia University of Business and Applied Sciences (Helia) have today signed an agreement concerning the establishment of joint holding company and the fusion of activities. The new HAAGA-HELIA University of Applied Sciences will start operations on 1 January 2007.
With the agreement, the parties involved seek to build a new, international and private university that is known for its strong expertise and connections to the business community. The merger will further consolidate the leading position that the two schools already have.
The Finnish name of the new university will be HAAGA-HELIA ammattikorkeakoulu, and the Swedish name HAAGA-HELIA yrkeshЖgskola.
The merger will have no immediate impact on students. Currently enrolled students will complete their studies as set in their current curricula. However, students who graduate after 1 January 2007 will have HAAGA-HELIA University of Applied Sciences written on their diploma.
After 1 January 2007, students can take courses in all HAAGA-HELIA units. The HAAGA units are the Haaga Institute School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management (in Helsinki), Helsinki School of Business (in Helsinki), Malmi School of Business (in Helsinki) and VierumДki Sports Institute (in VierumДki). Operations in Helia House and Helia's Porvoo unit will continue to function as presently.
The merger does not have any impact on current admissions, and the Ministry of Education has proposed that no cuts be made to student admission numbers. Students will have their own representation on HAAGA-HELIA's board.
